Yes, A Phone Can Give You Genuine Atmosphere
People underestimate how immersive a phone can be, probably because so many mobile games are loud and busy. But hand me a quiet, atmospheric game and headphones, and the small screen almost helps by shutting out everything else.
Hollow Lantern is the game that convinced me. It's dark, sparse and driven by the light of a single lantern that reveals the world around you. There's barely any UI clutter, and the sound design does half the work. Playing it late at night with headphones was genuinely tense.
The key is restraint. Minimal controls, no screen full of icons, and a steady frame rate that never breaks the mood. Because it runs cool, I could sink into long sessions without the phone reminding me it exists.
If someone tells you mobile games can't be moving or atmospheric, hand them this and a decent pair of headphones. It changed my mind.
