Fitting A Full RPG Into A Bus Ride
I used to think RPGs needed a couch and a free evening. Then I started playing them in ten-minute chunks between stops, and it changed how I look at the genre on mobile.
The trick is pace. Turn-based combat, like in Emberfall Saga, pauses for you. You can put the phone away mid-fight and pick up exactly where you left off. That's a luxury console RPGs rarely give you.
What matters most is the save system. A game that only checkpoints at bosses is useless on a commute. I want frequent auto-saves so a sudden stop never costs me progress. When a game gets this right, its length stops being intimidating.
So don't dismiss a big story RPG just because you're busy. Broken into small sessions, a fifty-hour game becomes a companion for months. I've finished more of them on the bus than at home.
